What are they doing in Iraq?

The things about Iraq that have been hidden from the public are quite disturbing. There are pieces of the puzzle that gruesomely come together, and they don't construct a pretty or heroic, for that matter, picture. After USA soldiers have come back from Iraq, many have experienced serious behavior changes and psychological damage. In 2008 only, 121 US soldiers committed suicide after coming back from Iraq (9 AM Newsletter).

Here's a film by Paul Haggis that eloquently shows the dramatic personality and social changes that Iraq inflicts in In the Valley of Elah.

Another intriguing display of psychological oddity from the Coen Brothers, you might remember the main negative character from Alejandro Amenabar's Mar adentro (Javier Bardem). Here's No country for old men.

Still, I don't think that we should judge Iraq based on a couple of movies. I'm sure there are still many things we don't now, but we should definitely consider more reliable sources than movies.

Actually, the Iraq movie in this post was based on statements and behavioral changes from soldiers who came from Iraq. All over the news you can see a lot of negative stories about things that happen there, I'm not talking only about the killing of so-called enemies, I'm talking about the people that fight there. You know the saying, there's no smoke without fire, well, the fire had to be pretty big so that everybody at one time or another is talking about the f***ed-up Iraq :).

I actually chose these two films in the post because they analyze fantastically accurate the impact of certain events on the human psychic. Watch them and then we'll talk.

But you do make a good point Ioana, we really shouldn't take everything as it is, we have to do our own little detective work sometimes :D.
